Bailout, bailout, who wants a bailout?

Our national leaders are dealing with a financial crisis with our banks, insurance companies, mortgage brokerages, and “insert name here” big company. The number being circulated is 700 billion dollars.

I want a bail out.

One billion would be fine, I’m not greedy.

It’s not likely of course that my desire will come to pass. In the “real world” a person has to spend carefully and pay his bills. It’s not reasonable, is it, for somebody to make hugely stupid decisions and then get a fresh start? Well, actually, a Christian does get exactly that in the area of personal forgiveness.

The Bible shows us the character of Christ as he hung on the cross, paying the penalty for our sin.

Luke 23:34, Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.

No doubt those in charge at the time had made a huge blunder in putting Jesus on the cross. Of all men living at that time (and any other time, for that matter) Jesus was the least deserving of death. He was perfect, which made Him the only sufficient sacrifice for our sins. And as He hung there, Jesus asked His Father to “forgive them.”

Forgiveness is different than a bail out. It’s better. Forgiveness promotes better living. I’m afraid a bail out only promotes continued risk taking. Forgiveness has already been paid for in full by Jesus on the cross. The proposed $700 billion bail out costs every American more than $2,000 in additional national debt.

If you haven’t already done so, would you kindly consider asking Jesus to be the Leader and Forgiver for your life.
