Forgive me for ignoring the potential of ‘today’. Fill me LORD with a divine sense of calling and expectation that You’re not only at work today, but also that You’d like me to join You in what You’re already doing. Use me Lord. Make me more useable, more pliable, and more resourceful in Your Kingdom work. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

“In the Stable” … Christmas Day

There is so much for us in Luke 2:7, “And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.”

I am told that when we were kids my brother Larry and I, twins, spent our first days in dresser drawers pulled out and placed on the floor as make-shift cribs. I suspect that this story is akin to the tale my dad tells about having to walk to school in the snow, uphill both ways (he grew up in Florida!).

The manger scene isn’t an exaggeration. The King of Kings was really born in a stable, and laid in a manger. As the for cattle lowing, and “no crying he makes” imagery from the carol “Away in a Manger” we can chalk those up to fancy. Sometimes it’s hard for people to get that the God of the Universe would start His incarnation outside of a palace.

God is for us, so He became like us … so we can be for Him, and become like Him. That’s Christmas in it’s simplest form.

Prayer: “Dear God, thank You for Christmas’ simplicity. We celebrate Your appearance here ‘in the likeness of men.’ Now, make us more like You please. Humility please, for me. And love, lots more love. Giving too, make me a giver. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
