1 Corinthians 6:1-13 talks about how to settle disputes among Christians. It’s a pretty shocking method that is selected, considering how litigious our society has become. Paul suggests (strongly!) that we take our disputes to the local church for settlement instead of to the local secular courts. Note that this advice is for a Christian’s civil (not criminal) dispute with another Christian.
This passage reminded me of a book I’ve been hearing about on “The Journey” radio station. The book is entitled, Settle It, and Be Blessed. The book goes beyond the legal arena to deal with our own need to settle the wrongs we’ve suffered, and of course the wrongs we’ve done to others. Holding on to the idea “I’ve been treated unfairly” holds us back from experiencing all that God wants for us.
Sometimes, Paul says in the 1 Corinthians 6 passage, it would be better to accept “being cheated” rather than to seek justice. It’s a radical view of entitlement that is worth a second look.
